Our Tree Services

Three things.
Done right.

No upsells, no sprawl. We focus on the three services that keep your property safe and beautiful — and we've built our name on them.

Dense evergreen forest 01

Tree Removal

Crucial for extracting diseased, dead, or dying trees before they threaten your home, power lines, or neighbors. Our crew takes down trees of any size — even in tight quarters against structures — safely and cleanly.

Tree Pruning & Thinning

Left unattended, a tree can grow in strange directions and eventually decline. Strategic pruning and thinning keeps trees healthy, lets light and wind through the canopy, and protects them when winter storms roll in.

Stump Removal

Ever tried removing a stump the old-fashioned way? It's no fun. Our grinding equipment makes stumps disappear below grade so you can reclaim your yard — no ropes, no trucks, no weekend lost to digging.

"They removed a 250-foot giant old grove tree — right up against one building and within a few feet of another. Safety was job one. The job was thorough, cleanup impeccable, and the crew was courteous to the family, pets, and neighbors at all times. The kind of outcome you hope and pray for."

— Lizbeth M.

"Star Tree Service was amazing! They did an amazing job and I am so pleased with the work. Very polite, super friendly, prompt service. Would highly recommend to anybody!"

— Alaina C.

"A windstorm dropped a fir across our driveway at 11 at night. They picked up the phone, were out at first light, and had it cleared before lunch. You can't ask for better than that."

— Marcus T.

"They thinned and pruned the big maples in our front yard and the difference is night and day — more light, healthier trees, and the yard looked cleaner when they left than when they arrived."

— Dana W.

"Two old cedar stumps we'd been mowing around for years — gone in an afternoon. Ground below grade, ready for sod. Fair price, first-name service. This is our tree company from now on."

Summer tree threats

Summer is a time of high activity for pests as well as tree diseases caused by fungi and other organisms. Some problems are simply aesthetic, while others are a real threat to tree health — it's important to have your trees checked to determine the underlying cause.

Tree care recommendations for summer

Given the stress from higher temperatures and lack of rainfall common in summer, it is critical to water your trees and shrubs thoroughly. A 3–4" layer of mulch, inspecting for pest infestations, and scheduling fall fertilization also help maintain tree health and vigor.

FAQ

Good questions,
straight answers.

Don't see yours? Call us at 253-853-TREE — a real person answers.

Do you offer free estimates?+

Yes — every quote is free, with no obligation. We'll walk the property with you, talk through what the tree needs, and give you a clear price before any work is scheduled.

Do you really answer emergency calls 24 hours a day?+

We do. Storms don't keep business hours, and a tree on your roof or across your driveway can't wait until Monday. Call 253-853-8733 any time, day or night.

What areas do you serve?+

We're based in Gig Harbor and cover Tacoma, Lakewood, Bremerton, University Place, Fox Island, Purdy, and Port Orchard. On the edge of that map? Call — we can usually make it work.

Can you take down a tree that's close to my house?+

Yes — tight-quarters removals are our specialty. We've taken down 150-foot trees standing right up against buildings by sectioning and lowering them piece by piece, with safety as job one.

What happens to the wood and debris?+

Your choice. We can haul everything away and leave the site impeccably clean, chip branches into mulch for your beds, or buck the trunk into firewood rounds and leave it stacked for you.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?+

Sometimes. Gig Harbor and surrounding jurisdictions each have their own rules, especially near shorelines and critical areas. We'll tell you up front if your job needs one and help you sort it out.

When is the best time to prune?+

For most Northwest species, late fall through winter — the tree is dormant and the structure is easy to read. But hazardous limbs and storm damage should never wait for the calendar.

How deep do you grind stumps?+

Typically well below grade — enough to replant grass, lay sod, or put a garden bed right where the stump used to be. If you're planning to build or pave over the spot, tell us and we'll grind deeper.

Is it better to grind a stump or remove it?+

Grinding is faster, less intrusive, and right for most yards — though it leaves the roots behind to decay naturally. Full removal heaves out the bulk of the stump and roots, which takes more time and heavier equipment but leaves a clean slate for new landscaping. And don't wait too long either way: a rotting stump becomes a home for termites and carpenter ants.

How much does tree removal cost?+

It depends on the tree — which is why we quote in person, for free. The factors that drive the price: location and access, size of the tree, equipment needed, safety and risk concerns, and the time and crew required. You'll get one clear number before we start, with no hidden fees.

If I cut a root, will the tree die?+

It can — improper root pruning can seriously harm or kill a tree. Rules of thumb: never cut roots wider than 2 inches or remove more than 15% at once, stay at least five trunk-diameters away from the tree, and do it in winter or early spring. When in doubt, call us before you dig.
